     Preston Lafayette Hopkins was born on 7 April 1836 at Tennessee.1,2 He was the son of Andrew Norman Hopkins and Jane McChristian.1 He appeared as a son on the census of 24 September 1850 in the household of Andrew Hopkins and Jane Hopkins at Austin, Travis County, Texas.2 He appeared as a son on the census of 10 August 1860 in the household of A. N. Hopkins and C. A. Hopkins at Austin, Travis County, Texas.3 He was employed as a carpenter on 10 August 1860 at Austin, Travis County, Texas.3 He married Mary Thompson, daughter of Wilson Thompson and Alice Martin, on 23 September 1868 at Austin, Travis County, Texas.1 He appeared as a son-in-law on the census of September 1870 in the household of Alice Thompson at Austin, Travis County, Texas.4 He was employed as a carpenter in September 1870 at Austin, Travis County, Texas.4 He died at 6 pm, Wednesday, 18 March 1908, at Confederate Home Hospital, 108 W. Tenth Street, Austin, Travis County, Texas, at age 71 years, 11 months and 11 days.1,5 He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, 1601 Navasota, Austin, Travis County, Texas.6
